Upgrade your gift-giving and wow the recipient with this simple yet beautiful technique.

This holiday season, if every American family wrapped just 3 presents in re-used materials, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields. However, most wrapping paper is torn and discarded moments after gift giving — not exactly something we regularly keep for future gifts!

So, you may be asking how can I wrap responsibly (and beautifully)? This is where furoshiki comes in.

Furoshiki is a Japanese fabric wrapping technique, perfect for gift giving. The word “furoshiki” refers to both the art of wrapping and the fabric itself. It is looked at as a gift within a gift as the fabric can be reused as a scarf, bag or even a discreet way to carry wine.

Check out the tutorial below for the traditional technique, but know that you can adopt it to any variation of your liking, depending on the size and shape of the present. Personalize it to the recipient with natural greenery or crafty items you have around the house. Have fun with it!
